I have a SMART Interactive White Board. Now what?

What, exactly, is an interactive white board?
An interactive white board (IWB) is most easily described as a large, touch sensitive, computer monitor. You are able to touch the white board to open programs, go to the Internet, play games, and simply write on it as you would a dry erase board.

How do I turn on the SMART Board?
  • turn on your computer and monitor
  • turn on your LCD projector: press the power button on the remote
  • You will see the image from your computer monitor projected onto the SMART Board.

Do I need special software?

You can work with the SMART Board without special software, just like you run programs on your computer. However, there is software that is free to download and allows you to create interactive activities.

The SMART Interactive White Board uses SMART Notebook 10 software which can be downloaded from smarttech.com. At school, your building SYSOP will download the software to your teacher computer. It is legal to download the software to your home computer, so that you can create lessons to use on a SMART Board in your classroom. Anyone can download a 30-day trial. However, if your district owns a SMART product, you can obtain a product key from smarttech.com to keep the software longer than the trial. Watertown CSD teachers can email dhayes@watertowncsd.org to get more information.

My SMART Board will be in my classroom and I do not know what to do.

I am Diane Hayes, Technology Integration Specialist for Watertown CSD and a certified SMART Notebook 10 trainer. I am here to help during the school day, as well as to provide after school staff development. The easiest way to contact me is email: dhayes@watertowncsd.org. My "home base" is Knickerbocker School, but you will rarely find me at my desk, as I love to be in classrooms helping with technology. I try to check my email often during the day.

I would like to attend a training, but the sessions are already full.

Sessions are limited to 15 participants, allowing me to spend quality time helping. I will be offering more sessions. Remember...I am available during the day to go to your classroom to help, even during class times.

I teach high school. I don't see how a SMART Board will help high school students.
