Creative Writing – Not Just Another English Class

 

Course Description:


This course will give you a chance to continue building your writing skills in a variety of formats and genres. Included in the class will be the opportunity to write in a variety of genres, including poetry, short story, flash fiction, reflections, journals, memoirs, autobiography, letters, advertisements and scripts.

 

We will utilize a variety of technological resources in the classroom such as computers, word processors, flash drives, LCD projector, Smartboard, and other multimedia equipment to allow for a range of learning opportunities. Since continued growth in reading is critical for growth in writing, you will also be exposed to a multitude of reading materials during the course. This course will also allow students opportunities to make choices as they develop their own writing voice and style.

 

Long Range Goals and Standards

 

In Creative Writing, we will:

 

·      Utilize the writing process including proofreading, editing, and rewriting.

 

·     Create written work that has a clear focus, sufficient detail, coherent   

       organization, effective use of voice, and correct use of the conventions of   

                   written Standard American English.

 

·     Write for a variety of purposes and audiences.

 

·     Access and use information from a variety of sources.

     

·      Read for comprehension, enjoyment, and literary value.

 

 

 

Materials Needed:


* (1) Notebook  (Specifically for Creative Writing)

* 2” Binder and 8-10 Section Dividers

* Pocket Folder

* Writing Utensils

* Lined Paper

* Flash Drive (Optional, but will be helpful)

II. Descriptive Writing

 

III. Essay Writing (Narrative)

 

IV. Poetry

 

V. Short Stories/Flash Fiction

 

VI. Letter Writing

 

VII.   Fairytales/Folktales/Fables

 

VIII. Electronic Writing  (Blogs, E-mails, Texts, etc..)

 

IX. Newspaper Writing

 

X. Script Writing /Interviewing

 

XI. Writing Advertisements

 

XII. Other Types of Non-fiction Writing

 

 

Important Notes:

 

·     You should be ready to participate fully in peer editing, self-editing, re-writing,  and a variety of evaluation and collaborative activities.  (These aren’t optional, they are part of the class!)

 

·    Saving all writing throughout the year is critical to your success in the final portfolio project. You will need a variety of pieces and to be able to show your understanding of the writing process.  Do Not Throw Things Away!!!

 

·    Deadlines for writing assignments are often spread out to allow time to work on assignments creatively. You must keep organized and keep track of due dates of the various assignments. Use your agenda book to help.

 

·    Be sure if you miss class for any reason that you ask for new material. Since much of the class assignments will be ongoing, you don’t want to miss anything.
