2nd Grade General Music Ohio Elementary Mr. Shaun Cunningham Welcome to 2nd grade general music here at Ohio Elementary School. This year in general music your student will be working on their performing, rhythm reading, sight singing and singing skills. What we will be doing during class, Rhythms– Students will be learning about reading basic rhythms on the musical staff. Rhythms will include Quarter and Half notes and rests. Instrument Names - This year we will be learning about the different types of instruments and what they sound like. Under my links, the San Francisco Symphony website has a wonderful resource for reviewing instrument names. Kodaly Hand Signs (Sight Singing) – We will be reviewing and using the Kodaly hand signs (Do, Re, Mi…). Students will master the Major Scale (Do -> Do) and will be working on singing intervals (pitches that are separated by more then one step on the major scale) We will also start identifying Do Mi and Sol on the staff. Note Names - Students will start learning about the different names notes have when they move up and down the staff. Students will also be establishing how pitches go higher as note move up the staff and pitches go lower as notes move down. Students will also be learning basic music symbols. Silver Burdett, “Making Music”– Anthology of music geared towards the 2nd grade performer as well as a resource for music activities and information.
