Board of Education Student Member

Dear Watertown High School Students (Grades 9-11),

We are excited to announce that in accordance with a new New York State law, the Watertown City School District will be placing a student on the Board of Education for the 2026-27 academic school year. This opportunity is available to current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who meet the following criteria:

  • You must be in good academic and behavioral standing.
  • You must have attended Watertown High School for a minimum of one full academic year.
  • You must be able to attend two Board of Education meetings each month. Transportation to and from the meetings is required.

  • You must demonstrate successful completion of a school board training course (More information will be provided).

The selected student will be an official member of the Board, meaning they will attend board meetings alongside other members but will not have voting rights. The student will also be able to participate in other board activities at the board's discretion, though they will not be able to attend executive sessions or meetings that aren't open to the public. Importantly, the student member will not receive compensation for attending board meetings.

This law, effective July 1, 2025, was passed to ensure students have a voice in school district policies and operations, while also giving students the opportunity to develop important civic engagement skills.

To apply for this unique opportunity, please complete the student application in the link below, which is due by April 24, 2026. The application requires two references: one from a teacher and one from a school administrator.
